Corinne’s Comeback

Now that we’re drowning in a sea of British female musical talent, it’s easy to forget that not so long ago there was precious little to get excited about from a Y chromosome perspective. So dire was the situation that for many years the Brit Award for Best British Female was jokingly referred to as ‘the Annie Lennox award’.

And the less said about Dido the better.

Joss Stone and KT Tunstall paved some of the way for the current crop of stars but it was the double whammy of Lily Allen and Amy Winehouse in 2006 which really got the ball rolling. Just three years later five of the 12 Mercury Music Prize nominees (including the eventual winner) were women.

Good stuff.

One name tends to be overlooked in this analysis though and that’s Corinne Bailey Rae. Not as in-your-face and tabloid-friendly as Lily or Amy, or as artily strange and exotic as Bat For Lashes or Florence Welch, Bailey Rae’s 2006 debut was derided in some quarters for being bland and unchallenging  – a sort of UK version of Norah Jones. Americans aren’t as consumed by snobbery as we are though, and she picked up four Grammy nominations and a personal invitation to appear on Oprah.

She looked set for an unprecedented level of transatlantic success (remember, this was before Winehouse and Leona Lewis broke big across the pond) and then… nothing. Or rather quite a lot actually. Her husband Jason died from an accidental drug overdose and Corinne promptly disappeared from view. Not that she’d ever been especially comfortable in the limelight anyway.

Last night I was lucky enough to attend her first proper gig (“in front of strangers”, as she put it) in more than two years. It was an intimate affair in a beautiful little venue called The Tabernacle in West London. After a slightly ropey opening (maybe it was just me but the drums sounded off), Corinne and her band soon found their feet and, on occasion, really flew. It was mainly new material (her second album is out early next year), which is always a tough gig for both performer and audience, but she was among friends and visibly grew in confidence as the hour progressed.

Inevitably, some of the songs were about her late husband and it felt almost intrusive to witness her perform them. The lyrics of something like I’d Do It All Again (the title says it all) are so personal that I fleetingly wondered whether she might break down mid-performance. No chance. There seemed to be a new steeliness about her, no doubt born out of her tragic experience, which was evident not just in her stage presence but in the new material itself.

Corinne Bailey Rae was already the equal of her most talented peers. Now she might just be ready to move ahead of the pack again.

I can’t think of anyone who deserves it more.

Jesus Lives?

25 years ago, a dance-pop group of very naughty boys called Frankie Goes To Hollywood released a single called The Power Of Love. If you’re too young to remember them, they belong to an era when genuinely hedonistic, subversive people made successful pop music. If you’re too old, imagine an S&M Gerry and The Pacemakers and you’ll be somewhere close.

Anyway, the video featured, believe it or not, a nativity scene (below):

Baby Jesus 1

Now I’m quite sure this piece of news isn’t exactly unrelated to their recently released Greatest Hits collection but it’s an interesting little nugget nonetheless. Apparently their record company is trying to track down the baby (well, 25 year-old adult as he would be now) who played Jesus in the video. All anyone knows is that he’s probably Israeli as that’s where the video was shot.

I’ve been asked to spread the word of their search and of course I’m happy to oblige in exchange for a reasonably pleasant lunch. So if you have any idea who and/or where ‘Jesus’ is, get in touch by emailing info@dawbell.com

Oh Ye Of Little Faith

My raving days are well and truly over (I look like the bloke who’s come to pick up his kid and wandered on to the dance-floor by mistake) but I still enjoy the odd ‘choon’ when nobody’s looking. A little bird told me that this Alex M.O.R.P.H. remix of Sun To Me by Faithless is what all the kids are dancing to at this year’s fresher’s parties.

I've been reading the comments. There is so much rubbish on who made rock music what it is today and, in my view, searching in all the wrong places for whom that person or group of persons might be.  John Lennon once said, "If there was another name for rock and roll, it would be Chuck Berry." Rock has some interesting and rather significant roots. Those claiming to know so much should look there. Each decade since ca. 1954 has some good music. Some, in fact, has been brilliant measured by any reasonable criteria.  One must trust his or her own ears to be the judge of that.  I have my list, but I'd never dictate it must be the definitive list. My list isn't finished because I haven't heard everything I might like.

Joan, the article you are referring to is quite clearly marked as being a collection of user comments from the MSN messageboards. Tom Townshend didn't write it and neither did I. You are more than welcome to eulogise to your heart's content about Elvis or anyone else but please at least read the article first.

Music's most overrated : It's interesting that the writer (Tom Towner?) has to resort to expletives when reviewing Elvis Presley and he has chosen a picture from the very worst film he ever made.  He obviously has never read any literature on the history of popular culture and in particular the rise of the rock'n'roll and the subsequent voice of youth  in the 1950s.  Does he realise that without Elvis we probably would not have today's pop music?  The achievements Elvis made in his lifetime were:

1.     1971  Lifetime Achievement Award by the American Academy of Recording Arts and Sciences.

2.     He is the only artist, living or dead, to be inducted into:

The Rock’n’Roll Hall of Fame (1986); The Country Hall of Fame (1998) and The Gospel Hall of Fame (2001); The Grammy Hall of Fame (6 recordings).

3.    ‘That’s the Way It Is’ was the first film documentary to be made about a popular artist.

4..     Over one billlion people worldwide watched ‘Aloha from Hawaii’ – more than watched Neil Armstrong walk on the moon.

5..     Elvis Presley was the first artist to have his image/name on a range of merchandise made available worldwide.

6.    ‘Aloha from Hawaii’ was the first television global satellite broadcast ever made.

7.    Elvis was awarded three Grammys in his lifetime, all for gospel recordings.

8.  The first artist to have no. 1 records in the UK and USA simultaneously

ALSO:  Go to Elvis.Com for an Overview of his other achievements in relation to chart positions of his singles and albums.

Elvis Presley has outsold all othermodern  popular artists ( exception is Bing Crosby), however, when you include merchandise and memorabilia, he sells more than any other artist, living or dead (still).

Read articles/book by  Paul Simpson;  Peter Guralnick; Jerry Hopkins.

Google in 'famous quotes about Elvis' and see which famous musicians rate Elvis and who was influenced by him  - from Leonard Bernstein to Bob Dylan; Mick Jagger to Frank Sinatra; Bing Crosby to Bono  the list is amazing

I suggest you study your subject a bit more Tom, your knowledge and reading is sadly lacking.  Also Google 'Will Friedwald Elvis' for an objective review of his vocal ability and range by an established jazz musician/writer who originally never heard an elvis recording until the 1970s - an interesting read that puts Elvis's vocal range and talent in perspective.  Joan Philiops

"Musics most overrated"
You Know nothing about music and this becomes obvious when you slag off acts like The Beatles and Queen!  Would you care to mention an act that has surpassed The Beatles? I would love to hear your suggestion as The Beatles have not been surpassed in very many areas, FACT. The one area you mention ie. songwriting, please tell me who has written better songs since The Beatles era? Except for a few on your 'overrated' list, none! I haven't even looked at the underrated list but i feel that may be more ammusing considering your laughable musical knowledge.

By the way, I'm 24 and obviously wasn't around in the 60's, and i do like a lot of modern bands; Muse, Coldplay, Doves, i also listen to a very wide range of music...much of it owing at least a nod to what The Beatles did for the music industry!  You are a fool to deny the greatness of those four scowsers, 3 of them being Hall Of Famers don't you know! And don't get me started on Queen, who by massively wide opinion put on the greatest live show EVER at liveAID!

Did you write that article to see if you could beat your very slightly less idiotic peer at receiving the most complaints/death threats?!!!
How you became an msn music editor with such an obvious lack of musical knowledge is beyond me!

"Musics most overrated" - One word WANKER!!! ... you have no concept of quality music and legends of the industry

"Musics most overrated" - Know. I have plenty of words to describe this guy. But i wont say them because im too nice. Greenday is an amazing band. Time of your life is an amazing song! Whats not to like? I would beat some sense into who wrote that article as he has no idea what the word 'music' means! Slagging off bands such as Greenday would give him such a bad reputation to such users on msn. He is an asshole who wrote that about them. The Verve also is a good band we them two songs which are also great. So's the rest of them.
I would want the person to be actually fired and then strapped to a pole with billy joe himself throwing stones at him! :@
Yes you are giving msn a bad name!

"Musics most overrated" - The author of this shyte must be a complete moron.  After threatening to abuse buskers with their guitar for playing green day, I would gladly beat some music taste into him but I guess the fool that wrote the article is probably too busy listening to europop and thinking thats cool!
They say opinions are like assholes, everyone's got one, but this author should keep his to himself.  IMO qualities like longevity and an ever expanding fan base should count for something.

Whoever wrote that "Music's Most Overrated" is a complete moron. Why would you put a band like Green Day on there? The person who wrote the article has probably only listened to 2 or 3 of their most popular and overplayed songs, it's not like they know crap. Why the hell isn't Miley Cyrus on there? SHE is very overrated, her voice isn't very amazing and her songs are not very creative or deep. Green Day on the other hand...hmmm, well i won't even start. Same goes with John Lennon and the Beatles and basically most of those on the list. If you fail to see that their lyrics are so well written and complex, and that their songs sound amazing, why the hell are you even writing an 'overrated' article on them? Because clearly you haven't researched well enough. Their music isn't even comparable to the crappy music 16 year olds that are selling today. If you're gonna be a music editor, at least do it right and listen to all the songs from the artists. And honestly, you're giving MSN a really bad name. Morons.
Aug. 19
I also read the "musics most overrated" and i would like to say that the guy who wrote it is a complete jerk if he thinks that green day is overrated. If you think that you could beat artists like clapton, lennon, green day and sabbath and any of the other people on that list than i want to hear you make something of yourself because everyone here knows that whatever you do will be shit compared to what you listed as overrated. Try winning 4 kerrang awars like green day or even 5 BRIT awards like john lennon did and he also got a further 4 BRIT awards with the beatles. The Beatles won a total of 31 grammy awards and John Lnnon made the Beatles and you have the nerve to say he's overrated. If you think youcan do better il be waiting to hear it.

I've just been reading through a couple of your points in 'music's most overrated' featured today on msn. All it seems to be is some over-opinionated moron laying into music they clearly don't like. To say that Jack White releeases "dissapointingly average records" is plain arrogant! He's lyrically and musically talented, take a listen to the icky thump or elephant albums for example. Yet in the same article to say that Eric Clapton has "vastly over-praised guitar expertise" is plain blasphemy! On another point; Black Sabbath are one of the greatest metal bands to have graced this earth and to say "And Ozzy Osbourne's vocals were hopelessly weak and wavering even then" is again ridiculous. Now fair enough I personally agree to Green Day and Morrissey being overrated, but thats my personal opinion, which unfortunately seems to be what this entire article has been; the personal opinion of someone who spends all day listening to radio1 buying Lady gaga albums with no actual fact to back up their points of view.

Is it just me, or does anyone else get bored of people who think they're some sort of music guru who endlessly drone on about what's 'music' and what isn't. You can see them a mile off, they always use words like 'manufactured', 'real' etc. My favourite is whenever a decent band starts getting attention they claim they've sold out, I love it, they're as regular as clockwork. I'm sorry to say I like a lot of 'manufactured' bands, I like original bands, I even like Duffy, but if that means I am not 'cool' in the eyes of the 'music nazis' I can live with it    ; ).

To be on topic, the Brit Awards are a celebration of one of the worst things about the music industry, manufactured poppy garbage. Such as Duffy, Take That etc. I mean Take That were miming for christ's sake. There was as much talent there as there is honey leaking out of my left testicle. The only person really deserving of an award was Florence and the Machine who won the critic's choice award. The rest of the **** was dribble voted for by the mindless masses who read the Sun and actually still buy singles in this day and age. Those award ceremonies will get worse and worse every year.

NOTE Kings of Leon actually used to be a good band, but when I saw them perform at that ceremony I realised they had sold their souls to the multimillion record demons.
